World Languages: Spanish

Mrs. Darla Ferdinand
High School Spanish Teacher

¡Bienvenidos! I hold a B.A. and M.A.T. in Spanish from Rutgers University, as well as having completed studies at the University of Salamanca in Spain. I was honored to be selected as RMHS Governor's Educator of the Year for 2022-2023.

With over 23 years of teaching experience at all levels and 30 credits beyond my master's degree, I am deeply passionate about language learning and cultural exploration. I believe in the power of a growth mindset and strive to create a classroom environment where all students feel encouraged to learn, grow, and succeed.

As a veteran Spanish teacher, I bring years of experience and a deep passion for sharing the richness of the Spanish language and hispanic cultures. My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student can succeed with the right support and encouragement. I strive to cultivate a classroom environment that values curiosity, creativity, and confidence.

My approach blends communicative language learning with cultural immersion—using authentic materials, engaging conversations, and interactive activities to help students connect with the Spanish language in meaningful ways. I believe language is more than vocabulary and grammar; it’s a bridge to understanding people, traditions, and perspectives. I am committed to helping each student grow not only in language proficiency but also in appreciation for global cultures and lifelong learning.

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy traveling, relaxing at the beach, experiencing new cultures through excursions and cuisine, and savoring a good cup of coffee. I also cherish quality time with my husband, two daughters, family, and friends.
